A deal to take Rui Patricio to Roma has progressed with Wolverhampton Wanderers now in the final stages of negotiations with the Serie A side, according to reports.

Roma have been trying to sign Patricio since announcing that Jose Mourinho would be taking over as manager in the Italian capital this season.

The goalkeeper is into the final 12 months of the four-year contract he signed at Wolves when he signed from Sporting for €18million in 2018.

Wolves have been holding out for a fee of around €12m (£10m) to sell Patricio, who has made 127 appearances for the club in the last three seasons.

According to respected Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, talks between the two clubs over a fee are now at the final stages with Patricio already having agreed personal terms with Roma.

Further progress over a deal is expected now Portugal are out of Euro 2020 following a 1-0 defeat to Belgium in the last 16 on Sunday. Patricio, 33, played all four of Portugal’s matches at the tournament.


Wolves’ replacement for Patricio is likely to arrive from Jorge Mendes’ Gestifute stable in the form of Olympiakos goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Sa, 28, is viewed as a possible successor to Patricio in Portugal’s national team and is very different in style to Wolves’ current number one.

He is comfortable with the ball at his feet and capable of relieving the pressure on his defence by commanding his area compared to Patricio’s preference of staying close to the goal-line and reacting from there.

He has spent the last three years in Greece - the first of those being on loan - playing regularly for Olympiakos, who he joined from Porto.

Sa, whose arrival could represent a a shift in Wolves’ playing style under Bruno Lage, has two years left on his contract at Olympiakos.

According to Romano, talks between Wolves and Olympiacos are at an advanced stage while a fee of around £9m has previously been touted.
